Talking Localization

The TLF meeting held yesterday 24 April can be described as an eye-opener to the Language Localization activities going on in Nairobi and on the African continent. Guest speaker, Google Localization Project Manager - Africa Mr. Denis Gikunda, made an insightful presentation. A summary of the proceedings will follow. For more information on this topic in the African context, visit www.panafri110.org for the PanaAfrican Localization Wiki and African Network for Localization. As promised, we shall get you more links. We continue the discussion in the online Group forum. Thanks members for attending and to Mr. Gikunda for the very appropriate presentation excellently delivered with an interactive touch! Message from Managing Director I would very much like to have been present at the second TLF meeting. However, here in Sweden I am attending a large translators’ convention in Sweden over the weekend. It is the annual conference of the Swedish Association of Professional Translators with a membership of just over 1000 translators from Sweden and around the globe. The 3-day conference, attracting over 300 translators, is filled with seminars on language related subjects such as information and a debate on CAT tools (Computer Aided Translation), “Translating xml-files in TagEditor”, “What happens first and after –about dtp in a translation aspect”, “Web-based translation tools – WebWordSystem”, “About Wordfast”, “Un-mouse your life...”, “The language of advertising” as well as individual meetings of the various language groups (Spanish, German, English etc) and the AGM of the association. Hopefully, one day in the not too distant future, Kenya will have its own translators association. And to this end the Tamarind Linguists Forum should be an excellent beginning.
